First-Year Student Advising

First-year students will receive their adviser assignment in advance of shopping week. Advisers will reach out to students by email to arrange a time to meet virtually. As students prepare for their first meeting with their adviser and for course shopping week, students are encouraged to do the following:

  1. Review the webinar for first-year students: Building Your Advising Network and Choosing Courses and the information contained on the Advising Programs Office website. Students are encourages to watch the webinar again, even if they attended a live session.
  2. Review the my.harvard course catalog looking carefully at course descriptions and visiting course Canvas websites. Add all courses to your Crimson Cart that you are interested in shopping or considering enrolling in to view any additional course materials that may be available, e.g., course videos or links to online shopping week sessions. Review Shopping and Course Registration Key Facts and Dates.
  3. Submit applications to Freshman Seminars by Monday, August 17.

Advisers will be able to release the hold on students' Crimson Cart beginning on Monday, August 17. Students do not need to have the hold lifted to enter lotteries for any courses that they are interested in.

Here are some links to other websites that students may find helpful as they research courses.

Lastly, we encourage students to visit the Orientation Website and Calendar with links to events hosted by the concentrations so that you can learn more about what studying in different fields might look like at Harvard.
