First-Year Student Advising

First-year students receive their adviser assignment in August. Advisers can be found in the Advising Network tab in my.harvard. As students prepare for meeting with their adviser about course selection, students are encouraged to do the following:

  1. Review the webinar for first-year students: Building Your Advising Network and Choosing Courses and the information contained on the Advising Programs Office website.
  2. Review the my.harvard course catalog looking carefully at course descriptions and visiting course Canvas websites. Add all courses to your Crimson Cart that you are interested in shopping or considering enrolling in to view any additional course materials that may be available, e.g., course videos or links to online shopping week sessions. Review Shopping and Course Registration Key Facts and Dates.
  3. Submit applications to Freshman Seminars by the application deadline as posted on the Freshman Seminars website.

Advisers will be able to release the hold on students' Crimson Cart beginning on Monday, August 17, 2020, (fall term) and Wednesday, January 13, 2021, (spring term). Students do not need to have the hold lifted to enter lotteries for any courses that they are interested in.

Here are some links to other websites that students may find helpful as they research courses.

Lastly, we encourage students to visit the Advising Programs Office exploring concentrations webpage and the Harvard College academics webpage with links to the various concentrations so that you can learn more about what studying in different fields might look like at Harvard.
